sustainable solutions

The vision of sustainable corporate change took its first steps in 2002, and has not stopped to date.

In addition to being ISO 14001 certified, we have FSC certification, which guarantees that the product was made with raw materials from forests that are properly managed according to the principles of the two main standards: forest management and chain of custody.

In 2018 we become one of the first Italian B Corp companies. Being part of it means redefining as a company the meaning of ‘profit’ as the ultimate goal in a business perspective. The profit, in this case, is to return sustainable models to society, with a focus on the environment and social responsibility.

In 2020, we choose to become a BENEFIT Corporation. Our purpose as a Benefit Corporation includes creating a Common Benefit (Public Benefit) in the community in which we operate, defined as a positive and concrete impact on people and the environment.

Recycling Self-Adhesive Films

Plastics whose resin is derived in different percentages from post-consumer recycling:

  • White/transparent PP containing different percentages of recycled materials from post-consumer waste: up to 30% mechanically recycled plastic or 99% chemically recycled plastic.
  • White/transparent PE containing different percentages of recycled materials from post-consumer waste: up to 30% mechanically recycled plastic or 50% post consumer and 50% post industrial chemically recycled or 99% post industrial chemically recycled plastic.
  • Transparent or white PP from recycled plastic from Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) waste. Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) is plastic waste defined as “at risk of ending up in the ocean”. It is estimated that OBP generates 80% of marine plastic waste. OBP is ‘abandoned plastic waste’ located within 50 km of shores where waste management is non-existent or inefficient.
  • White PET containing up to 25% post-consumer recycled plastic.
Ultra-clear PET containing up to 90% post-consumer recycled plastic.

BioBased Self-Adhesive Materials from Renewable Sources

  • White paper from sugar cane fibre: made from 95 % sugar cane fibre and 5 % hemp from processing waste
  • NATUREFILM Clear and White is a cellulose-derived, compostable and biodegradable film with the same desired qualities as plastic, but without the harmful impact on our environment. The cellulose in NatureFilm comes from sustainably managed forests (FSC), which are not genetically modified. We can supply it in combination with a compostable adhesive.
  • PP BIOBASED: PP produced from Bio naphtha, a 100% wood-based solution made from a residue of the cellulose production process from responsibly managed forests.
  • BIO CIRCULAR PE and BIO CIRCULAR PP: made from used cooking oil and up to 98% ISCC+ certified BioCircular content (according to the mass balance principle) to reduce the use of virgin fossil sources.

MarbleBase, no tree required.

Made from quarry waste.

80% of the face material MarbleBase is made from calcium carbonate from marble quarry waste. The remaining 20% is high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Entirely recyclable, made without water or bleaching agents and C2C Silver certified, MarbleBase offers a radically different approach to sustainable sourcing and gives you a new and engaging story to share with customers and consumers concerned about resource consumption.

The benefits.

Tear-resistant and waterproof, MarbleBase is approved for contact with moist, non-acidic and fatty foods. It is an excellent new alternative for labelling organic food, health and personal care products and beverages.

Thinner materials with maintained performance

ThinkThin: uses fewer resources!

  • THE PRODUCT: ThinkThin™ label constructions are up to 50% thinner than conventional label constructions. Depending on the product, they are made with up to 39% less oil, up to 46% less energy, up to 61% less water and generate up to 41% less waste. Increases efficiencies
  • THE APPLICATIONS: Can be used wherever conventional films are used

Special stickers for the Multicycle

Special materials with particularly tough adhesives are now available on the market, designed to withstand the reuse of primary packaging over time, guaranteeing constant aesthetic quality and consequent reuse. In particular, beer bottles, and the beverage sector in general, is the main user of these materials.

Reducing the raw materials used and the waste produced during the product life cycle can significantly reduce the environmental impact of a label

PAPERS 70 g semi-coated vs. 80 g semi-coated

FILMS Coextruded on PET 23 vs. PE85 on Glassine

The Benefits of Using Thinner Materials: Should 1,000,000 sq m of PE85 on glassine be replaced with co-extruded PET23, these would be the practical results:

Linerless: Labels without silicone backing

  • 30 % thinner substrates containing 50 % more labels per roll to reduce reel changes
  • Siliconised backing eliminated and 42 % reduction in solid waste produced plus 40 % reduction in water usage per sqm
  • Ideal for logistics labels with regular shape. Need for specific applicators.

Washable Labels

Special materials designed for the beverage market that uses self-adhesive clear-on-clear solutions and needs to be able to wash the bottle so that it can be reused are now available on the market.

The washing cycle in which the special material, upon reaching a temperature between 65° and 85° naturally detaches itself from the bottle/flask in a perfect way so that it can be refilled and used again.

Recycling and Compostability

The CleanFlake Solution

In order to improve the recyclability of PET packaging, SALES proposes a line of materials called ‘CleanFlake’ that guarantees perfect release of the label and adhesive from the PET bottle during the recycling process.

In the high-temperature washing cycle, the CleanFlake materials (label face and adhesive) naturally detach from the PET bottle, enabling perfect recycling and greater efficiency in the production of rPET

1 kg of rPET uses 84 % less energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 71 %.

Special Adhesives for Glass

To improve the recyclability of glass packaging, technologies are available that allow easy separation between the label and the glass container

  • Increases the sustainability credentials of brands
  • Improves the recycling process of disposable glass bottles
  • Maintains the on-shelf appeal of the product
  • Offers all the benefits of self-adhesive materials
    Problem

Up to 74% of label material can enter the recycling process. Up to 40 kg of glass fragments per tonne of glass ends up in landfill

Solution

The adhesive ‘deactivates’ during the glass bottle recycling process, making it easier to peel off the label.

Result

This technology reduces the amount of glass that ends up in landfill to 1.5 kg per tonne, improving the quality and quantity of recycled glass.

HOW IT WORKS:

Specialised operators can take care of your waste by identifying the best disposal solution for each type:

  • Paper and cardboard, silicon paper, plastic, if properly sorted, are recycled
  • Trim scraps and other non-recyclable waste are processed to produce alternative fuel to coal for cement works.

BENEFITS

In most cases, potential savings on current disposal costs, generally in the order of 10-20%.

  • Avoid landfill or incineration
  • Reduce consumption of non-renewable fossil fuels

CERTIFICATION:

The operator can issue a certificate testifying to the environmental benefits of this approach. Proof of your commitment to sustainability to share with your customers, employees and other stakeholders.
